Male and female tonic herbs: How they overlap, how they are different.

MALE                                              FEMALE

Wild Panax Ginseng                        Damiana

Yohimbe                                           Wild Yam

Damiana                                           Licorice

For both sexes, the following herbs contain sterols and other phytochemicals that the body uses to build/produce testerone, or estrogen/progesterone, or Gonadotrophin-releasing hormones.

SCHULZE: Damiana is a male and female stimulator, but is used more in women. For females, wild yam is a good one. It contains large amounts of sterols and was used commercially to produce all types of steroids. So, for a woman, it's a tremendous food to create hormones again.

Licorice is a great female hormone stimulator, and also contains sterols which will give a woman more estrogen and progesterone. Sterols are what your body makes hormones from. That's why a lot of these stimulants can be used for men and women.

For example, a lot of people thought that wild yam contained estrogen. It doesn't. It contains sterols that your body can make estrogen from. Siberian ginseng is another good example. It's good for men and women. I've read numerous studies of getting animals' testerone levels up using Siberian ginseng, even intravenously, to breed cattle

I use it for women, but just as an adjunct, because when you are building a female tonic, we want to put a number of different herbs in that contain sterols - and let the body pick out what it wants.

I also used a pint or more a day of sarsaparilla, a good strong decoction. It has the same effect as damiana and also wild yam. A good strong feeling of being a woman. I guess that would be the best way to describe it. Some people hate the taste of sarsaparilla. I like it, because I grew up with it.

All of these, damiana, wild yam, and licorice are on the female side, even though men can use damiana and licorice.

Siberian ginseng and saw palmetto are for both sexes, that's why they are in both my male and female formulas. However, saw palmetto has additional chemicals that really help clean out and reduce inflammation in the prostate.

On the men's side, I will include damiana, but I look more to Yohimbe, which could be looked at as a male damiana. The male tonic I make heavier in the ginsengs, but I don't use wild yam or licorice.

To sum up, all the herbs can be taken separately, except Yohimbe, which tastes terrible, and should always be combined into a formula.
