The See also:country is much broken up by hills and rocky ranges; the Aravalli range divides it into two portions, See also:running from See also:north-See also:east to See also:south-See also:west. The south and south-east See also:part of the territory is mountainous and rugged, containing the lofty See also:Mount See also:Abu, an isolated See also:mass of See also:granite See also:rock, culminating in a cluster of hills, enclosing several valleys surrounded by rocky ridges, like See also:great hollows. On both sides of the Aravallis the country is intersected with numerous See also:water channels, which run with considerable force and See also:volume during the height of the See also:rainy See also:season, but are dry for the greater part of the See also:year. The only See also:river of any importance is the Western See also:Banas. A large portion of the state is covered with dense See also:jungle, in which See also:wild animals, including the See also:tiger, See also:bear and See also:leopard, abound. Many splendid ruins bear See also:witness to the former prosperity and See also:civilization of the country. The See also:climate is on the whole dry; in the south and east there is usually a See also:fair amount of See also:rain. On Abu the See also:average See also:annual rainfall is about 64 in., whereas in Erinpura, less than 5o M. to the north, the average fall is only between 12 and 13 in. Pop. (1901) 154,544, showing a decrease of 17% in the See also:decade, due to the results of See also:famine.

The See also:protection of the See also:British was sought in 1817; the pretensions of Jodhpur to See also:suzerainty over Sirohi were disallowed, and in 1823 a treaty was concluded with the British See also:government. For services rendered during the See also:Mutiny of 1857 the See also:chief received a remission of See also:half his tribute. The chief, whose See also:title is maharao, is a Deora See also:Rajput of the Chauhan See also:clan, and claims descent from the last See also:Hindu See also:king of See also:Delhi. The state is traversed by the Rajputana railway. The See also:town of SIROHI iS 28 M. N. of Abu-road station. Pop. (1901) 5651. It has manufactures of See also:sword-See also:blades and other weapons. The Crosthwaite See also:hospital, which is built and equipped on See also:modern principles, was opened by See also:Sir See also:Robert Crosthwaite in See also:December 1897.
