He played the See also:part of Allworth in the first presentation of See also:Massinger's New Way to Pay Old Debts (1748), and during the summer he played Romeo and other leading parts in See also:Bristol. For eight years he was the leading See also:comedy actor at the Smock See also:Alley See also:theatre in See also:Dublin, but in 1759 he returned to Drury Lane and took leading parts until 1802. One of his earliest successes was as See also:Lord Ogleby in The Clandestine See also:Marriage (1766), which was compared to Garrick's See also:Hamlet and See also:Kemble's See also:Coriolanus, but he reached the See also:climax of his reputation when he created the part of See also:Sir See also:Peter Teazle at the first See also:representation of The School for See also:Scandal (1971). He was the author of a number of farces, and part-owner and manager of several theatres, but his fondness for gambling brought him to poverty.
