Books Recommended and Available for Purchase

There are a number of books which I would not hesitate to recommend to those who are interested in Charles Hoy Fort, as well as other subjects and authors that I have read. Some of these books and authors are available thru Amazon.com in the United States, Amazon.co.uk in the United Kingdom, and Chapters.com in Canada. I am providing this page to provide some guidance that might not be readily available in choosing a book, (such as contents or differences in editions that are not usually described), to provide links to purchase specific books, and to provide search boxes for different regions, as well as links to individual distributors. Also, by ordering a book thru these links, I may be provided a commission, which can help pay the costs of maintaining and for improving this web-site.

The Complete Books of Charles Fort

Dover Publications (1975, Hardcover)

In 1973, I conducted a search at the United States Copyright Office to ascertain what copyrights still applied to the various books of Charles Hoy Fort and to whom these rights were assigned. My findings and the results of an official search by the Copyright Office staff showed that none of the copyrights of Fort's books had been renewed and that all had come into the Public Domain. The only copyright which still applied to the various editions was the introduction by Tiffany Thayer to the Holt edition of The Books of Charles Fort, originally published in 1941. When this information was provided to Ron and Paul Willis, we arranged to visit Dover Publications, which had expressed an interest in reprinting Fort's books. Our proposal was to provide a new introduction to the book and an expanded and corrected index, which was to be my contribution. Dover Publications declined our offer; but, instead, Dover did obtain a new introduction from Damon Knight, (who had authored a biography of Fort, Charles Fort: Prophet of the Unexplained, 1970), and reprinted the miserable index of the Holt edition. If nothing else, Dover has kept Fort's books in print for twenty-five years and has offered a decent price for Fort's iconoclastic books: The Book of the Damned, New Lands, Lo!, and Wild Talents. This collection is not "Complete" and sensibly, (if unconsciously), excludes The Outcast Manufacturers, (Fort's earlier novel). And, these iconoclastic books are available in hypertext editions elsewhere in this web-site. Thayer was responsible for some editing, where typographical errors and omissions required correction, and minor changes in spelling and the identification of source references. As an economical edition of Fort's books, I would recommend this book at this time.

New Lands

by Charles Hoy Fort

(John Brown Publishing, revised edition, 1996)

Lo!

by Charles Hoy Fort

(John Brown Publishing, revised edition, 1997)

Quite a few Forteans in Britain had complained that they could not readily purchase copies of Fort's books, and the John Brown Publishing eventually agreed to publish them to meet the needs of the readers of their Fortean Times. Altho I would have preferred to have seen the reprinting of the original editions of Fort's books in an identically sized formats, I agreed to provide a "British" edition with many revisions to the texts (correcting errors, standardizing citations, British spelling), to which were added new introductions and indexes. Owing to an error in the binding of The Book of the Damned, I could not recommend the copies from the first printing but have been assured that the problem would be corrected in any future printings. Also, the cover art selected for the books was certainly nothing that I would have expected. As only 2,000 copies of each of Fort's books may have been printed initially, there may again be problems in availability; and, as the revision was made for a British audience, the distribution in the United States and Canada was purposely restricted.

The UFO Book: Encyclopedia of the Extraterrestrial

by Jerome Clark

(Visible Ink Press, 1997)

For an economical and very comprehensive review of UFO phenomena, (including a short section on Charles Hoy Fort), I would recommend this book.
