Lymphoid Interstitial Pneumonia

Lymphoid interstitial pneumonia is an uncommon lung disease in which mature lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) accumulate in the alveoli and in the spaces between alveoli.

Lymphoid interstitial pneumonia occurs in children but rarely in adults. About one fourth of cases occur in people with Sjögren's syndrome (see Section 5, Chapter 68). Lymphoid interstitial pneumonia also may develop in children and adults with HIV infection. The disease progresses slowly but may lead to the formation of cysts in the lungs and to lymphoma. Lymphoid interstitial pneumonia is sometimes relieved by corticosteroids.
