WHAT IS PREMARIN™?
PREMARIN™ stands for PRegnant MARe's UrINe. Premarin™ is
a drug put out in many forms (pills, creams, injections, patches) and is used to reduce
the symptoms of menopause in women or women who have had a hysterectomy.
WHAT ARE THE LIVING CONDITIONS OF THE MARES?
Since there are roughly 600 producing PMU farms in Canada (and
about 40 in the United States when this was written). HorseAid can only generalize.
Pro-PMU people focus on the fact that the mares live out in 1,000+ acres pastures with
their foals for up to six months of the year. Anti-PMU people focus on the fact that the
pregnant mares are kept tied up indoors for at least six months out of the year. To
produce Premarin™, these mares are impregnated, fitted with a UCD and normally kept
throughout their normal pregnancy of eleven months in stalls just 8 feet by 3 1/2 feet by
5 feet! Just before foaling they are taken "off line" and allowed to foal in
normal sized quarters. In some cases they are artificially inseminated within two weeks of
foaling and returned to the PMU production line again. The foal is then removed from the
mare and sold for slaughter. As for the use of catheters, PMU supporters say that they are
no more -- now "urine collection devices" are used. But the UCD's are actually
less hygienic for the mares, since it allows their urine to soak the skin of the vulva.

Cruelty-Free Substitute Challenges Premarin™

Beginning this month, the way B.C. pharmacists fill prescriptions for
estrogen- replacement treatments could affect the lives -- and deaths -- of thousands of
horses in Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. That's because in this month's issue of The
Bulletin, the official journal of the College of Pharmacists of British Columbia, the
college has declared the drugs CES and Premarin™ to be interchangeable.
Both CES and Premarin™ can be prescribed to women suffering the
symptoms of menopause. They are also said to help prevent heart disease and osteoporosis.
But while CES is made from soybeans and yams, Premarin™ is derived from the urine of
pregnant mares -- 50,000 or more of them. ...CES is about 25 percent less expensive than
Premarin and because it's plant-derived, Kellosalmi says, there are no ethical concerns
with its production.
Kellosalmi says it's an important development because it raises again
the concerns he and other doctors have about Premarin™ production. Recently, he
appeared in a CBC documaentary about its manufacture.
"My experience has been that most people thank me for the
information. Most people say 'I'm glad you told me. If I knew (how Premarin™ was

"The fight to halt the production of Premarin™
continues.... One can guess it is only because there is an increasing number of
alternatives becoming available, as well as an even greater push by the public seeking out
these alternatives. ...Synthetic alternatives to Premarin™ are approved for treating
menopausal symptoms, and some of them are approved also for treating osteoporosis or
certain phases of some breast or prostate cancers. Two of the plant-based synthetic
alternatives have precisely the same government approved list of total treatment
indications as does Premarin, and they are less costly besides. The province of Ontario
now considers a synthetic estrogen to be automatically interchangeable with
Premarin™."

horses' urine, and most of the 10 known hormones in Premarin™
are not at all natural to the human female, being horse hormones that are chemically
different from human hormones. No major clinical benefit has been accepted and
proven for up to 8 of them. Evidence also suggests that Premarin™ contains several
unknown ingredients, and variability between different lots of Premarin™ has been
documented as well. As a horseperson, medical doctor and a human being, I cannot justify
