1630s, "having an aptitude for mimicry," from Greek mimētikos "imitative, good at imitating," from mimētos, verbal adjective of mimeisthai "to mimic, represent, imitate, portray," in art, "to express by means of imitation," from mimos "mime" (see mime (n.))
