agronomy (n.)

"science of land management for crop production," 1796, from French agronomie (1761), from Greek agronomos "overseer of land," from agros "a field, a farm; the country," as opposed to the town (from PIE root *agro- "field") + nomos "law or custom, administering" (see -nomy).
