Humans differ from animals, according to Marx, by the way they produce their own means of subsistence. This is an action which is conditioned by their physical organization. People are indirectly producing their actual material life whenever they produce their subsistence. What they must produce is dependent upon what they discover already existing in their lives without which they could not live. They then must busy themselves reproducing those circumstances or things.
