The Marx(ist) Glossary

rural vs. urban

It was Marx's belief that the greatest division of material labor lay in the separation of the city and the rural settlements. He saw the urban gathering as barbarism while the farm life was civilized. The mere existence of a town meant administration, police, taxes, and the like. In other words, the city necessitated politics. While the city stood for a concentration of population and the instruments of capitalism, the country demonstrated isolation and separation.
