The Marx(ist) Glossary

liberty

Marx defined liberty as the power which a person has, to do everything, which does not harm the rights of others. Liberty reaches its limits when another would be harmed by an action. These limits are determined by the law in the same way that land boundaries are marked by stakes. The right of liberty is not founded on the relationship between one person and another, but rather on one person's freedom to be separated from another.
