SUBJECT:  SOUTHEAST TURKEY PRESS SUMMARY, 
NOVEMBER 13, 2002 
 
 
1.  This is the Southeastern Turkey press summary for 
November 13, 2002.  Please note that Turkish press 
reports often contain errors or exaggerations;

POLITICS, SECURITY, HUMAN RIGHTS

2.  OVER 300 KILOS OF HASHISH SEIZED 
(Turkiye)  Acting on a tip, Hakkari police seized 
302.5 kilograms of hashish in 17 bags in Yuksekova 
(Hakkari).  One suspect was arrested; another managed 
to run away in the dark.  In addition, police arrested 
Ercis (Van) resident Fesih Cengiz, who was about to 
throw 28 kilograms of hashish in a thrash can.  Police 
later seized another 200 grams of hashish in Cengiz's 
home. 
 
 
3.  ILLEGALLY IMPORTED CRUDE OIL SEIZED 
(Turkiye)  Police seized five tons of illegally 
imported crude oil in Mardin's Kiziltepe township and 
arrested a suspect.

4.  HILTON SUFFERS 
(Bolge)  Adana HiltonSa Business Development Director 
Mustafa Cevizci claimed 750 reservations for November 
and 3,500 reservations for December had been cancelled 
due to the Adana Airport's closure to flights 
(beginning on November 4).  However, the closure 
helped bus companies;  Ulusoy Travel Company Adana 
Regional Director announced a visible increase in the 
number of passengers, resulting in additional bus 
services to Ankara and Istanbul. 
 
 
5.  EDUCATION PARK IN DIYARBAKIR 
(Hurriyet/Milliyet/Cumhuriyet)  The Turkish Education 
Volunteers Foundation (TEGV) has put into service the 
Diyarbakir Educational Park, which was constructed by 
TEGV in Diyarbakir's Baglar district.  The park, which 
cost USD 1 million to build, will provide multi- 
faceted after-school education to an average of 3,000 
children aged 7-16 every year.  The Park has multi- 
purpose halls, volunteer rooms, six classrooms, 
ceramics and drawing workshops, a library, computer 
and Internet center rooms and a canteen.  TEGV 
National Vice President Burhan Karacam, TEGV board 
members, State of Emergency (OHAL) Regional Governor 
Gokhan Aydiner and Diyarbakir Governor Ahmet Cemil 
Serhadli attended the inauguration ceremony.
