Understanding cables

1.  Per instructions in State 04854, Emboff expressed gratitude for 
Indonesian assistance to Haiti.  Riaz Saehu, Deputy Director Office 
of Information and Public Diplomacy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 
stated that Indonesians empathized with victims of natural 
disasters.  He noted that the GOI had organized its disaster 
assistance team and supplies within days of the earthquake.  The 
team departed Indonesia for Haiti via Honolulu on January 17.

2.  Emboff delivered the message on the registration of donations 
via UN Flash Appeal to Azraf Firman, Deputy Director for 
Humanitarian Assistance, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  He thanked 
Emboff for the information and promised to share it with his 
colleagues. 
 
Embassy Support of Indonesian Assistance

3.  As reported Jakarta 00061, the National Body for Disaster 
Assistance, in coordination with the Indonesian military, assembled 
a team of 75 rescue workers and approximately 1.6 million dollars 
worth of assistance for Haiti.  At the request of the Ministry of 
Foreign Affairs, Emboffs worked closely with the GOI to ensure that 
the team had the needed transit visa waiver and flight clearances. 
January 21, Seputar, a respected Indonesian newspaper, published 
Ambassador Hume's editorial.  The Ambassador highlights Indonesia's 
leadership role in the global community and that Indonesia is an 
important partner for the United States.
