I grew up in a foreign country. We called it America.
Born in 1945, my childhood was in the fifties and my memories start mainly at about the time of the Korean War. By 1960, hormones had taken complete control, as they have a way of doing with all teenagers, whose mantra is, "If you don't think about sex every 3 minutes, your mind is wandering." But I was a late bloomer, romantically speaking. Sweet 16 and never been kissed, believe it or not. I was to make up for lost time later.
I first became aware of Henry Kissinger during the early '70s, when he and a cadre of crooks passed themselves off as the Nixon Administration. Kissinger, Cheney, Baker and Rumsfeld were among those who never resigned, were impeached or went to jail. I already had served the military in the East China Sea, lost too many friends to the Viet Nam "conflict" and become fairly antiwar in my outlook. Since most everybody who was antiwar then was a leftist, I assumed that I was, too. Of course, it was infinitely easier to attract girls with a liberal outlook. And, I was attending Cal Berserkely (living on Regent Street, just a block below what was then becoming People's Park), after all, albeit in the Graduate School of Business. Of course, I am still antiwar (call it a weakness) but now somewhere to the right of Attila the Hun.
At the time, Kissinger was flitting around the globe at Nixon's behest. "Jet plane diplomacy" is how it was characterized at the time. It is largely forgotten that Kissinger's most notable negotiations with the Viet Cong concerned the size and shape of negotiating tables.
Nixon was elected in 1968 over Hubert Humphrey (just barely, too) on a pledge to end the Viet Nam war, the outcry over which had savaged Lyndon Johnson so badly that he declined to run for re-election. Instead, Nixon (and Kissinger, a key policy player as the Secretary of State, don't forget) escalated the war, sending troops secretly into countries adjoining Vietnam, killing countless civilians along the way (think napalm, carpet bombing and My Lai) and leading to an endless stream of body bags coming home. Walter Cronkite's main message each night was the "body count" report - theirs vs. ours, as though it were a sporting event.
Nixon began his run for reelection at a time when he was doing poorly in the published polls, ostensibly because of Viet Nam. Remember that the same people owned the media then as today. While the media disapproved of Viet Nam, today it is positively enthralled with America's war on Islam, thus the difference in poll results. Nixon beat McGovern in every state except Massachusetts and Wash, D.C., in a landslide of epic proportions which proved the polls to have been jiggered. Of course, those who are paying attention have noticed the polls to be as jiggered today, only in the opposite direction.
A month or so prior to the 1972 election, Kissinger loudly proclaimed, "Peace is at hand." After Nixon's landslide, it became obvious that Kissinger had lied in order to help ensure continuity for the Nixon crime syndicate.
I sometimes wonder if what Kissinger really said was, "Piece is at hand." You see, at the time, Kissinger was also making statements about power being the "ultimate aphrodisiac" and, believe it or not, dating starlets like Jill St. John (one of the Bond girls, for reasons that were obvious at the time).
The furor around Kissinger being appointed recently by Bush the Second to head up the "independent" investigation into 9-11 illustrates just how many grudges have been carried forward by my generation about the man.
Never mind that many of Kissinger's key clients in recent years (he goes by many titles, but they all translate into "influence peddler"), are citizens of the country generally fingered for the outrage: Saudi Arabia. This tells the Saudis that they are safe from being held accountable, of course. Nor will the real culprits be identified, a la the Warren Commission. The "lone gunman" in this case will prove to be the guy named by the media while the WTC towers literally were crumbling: Osama bin Laden. Big surprise.
Face facts - Kissinger still is a liar. Kissinger still is serving the interests of those who really run things in America and who want to impress the New World Order upon the rest of the world.
Think not? Consider the following from the garrulous Mr. Kissinger: "Today, America would be outraged if U.N. troops entered Los Angeles to restore order. Tomorrow they will be grateful! This is especially true if they were told that there were an outside threat from beyond, whether real or promulgated, that threatened our very existence. It is then that all peoples of the world will plead to deliver them from this evil. The one thing every man fears is the unknown. When presented with this scenario, individual rights will be willingly relinquished for the guarantee of their well-being granted to them by the World Government." (Dr. Henry Kissinger, Bilderberger Conference, Evians, France, 1991)
I used to love America. I still do, just as I still love those girls who inhabit my memory, the ones I dated so long ago. Of course, they have changed with time and are no longer anything like the adorable creatures I once knew. I have met a few of them in recent years and found them to be singularly unattractive. America has become like that to me.
In particular, I recall one girlfriend who went off on a weekend trip with an old boyfriend after we had taken up with one another. It was never the same with her after that betrayal. Heartbreakingly pretty at the time, time has been particularly vicious to her.
America has taken up with another and joined that category in my mind. I remember and love what she was (in the fifties, especially), but what she has become today is akin to a spiteful and hateful dowager, grotesque in her grasping attempt to control all within her reach.

Turns out, the guy with whom America
has been cheating on me, among others, is none other than Henry Kissinger.
He was right about power, you know.
Of course, so was Lord Acton, in his
letter to Bishop Mandell Creighton, 1887: "Power tends to corrupt,
and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad
men."
