PARROT NEUROSIS The Diagnostic and Statistical Manuel of Mental disorder published by the American Psychiatric Association, has for some unexplainable reason (perhaps they were trying to placate Christian sensibility)left out a very common disorder, usually noticed in those who are born-again Christians. It is called parrot neurosis or detached mimic effect. Parrot neurosis is a spontaneous abreaction that usually occurs as soon a born-again Christian encounters reason and logic. Clinically, what usually happens is the brain disengages from its primary function and is paralyzed with fear when that Christian has to think for him or her self. As a coping mechanism, the person goes into the parrot mode of defense and begins to quote scriptures from the bible. Another aspect of this disorder is the victims' thinking becomes disorganized(as in a psychotic episode) they talk of flying into the sky after they are dead to a place called heaven where they will walk on clouds, where they will never have to eat, go to the lavatory, take a shower again for eternity. Once locked into this biblical parroting and disorganized think-mode, it is very difficult for them to stop. The chance for a cure for this malfunction of the brain is very poor. Its genesis can often be traced to Christian families that gave their children dolls which, when you pull a string, quotes passages from the Bible or to parents who mimic Bible speaking dolls Age of onset. Most often, this condition starts at a very early age. However, it becomes severe with regression to an infantile dependency state, where reason is suppressed and feelings take over-often called born-again experience. This condition gets worse with age. Impairment. These people can never relate with normal people (atheists) they most often seek out others who share their psychosis and talk crazy. It is called glossolalia. This mental disorder also results in rigid black and white thinking and literal mindedness. This behavior can cause those not effected severe headaches. Complications. When these people hold political office they take with them this disordered thinking. They become hostile to everything that is liberal minded. Familial Patterns This disorder is found in families, usually handed down from earlier generations. However, the hackneyed quotes remain the same. Newton Joseph, Ph.D.
