 picturing Mt. Vernon

geowashingtonspoon1.jpg (58236 bytes)

This beautiful sterling silver spoon pictures President and Brother George Washington and his home at Mt. Vernon in high relief.   On the front of the handle is the White House and the Geo. Washington National Monument.  On the back of the handle is his home at Mt. Vernon and his family tomb.   It measures 5 1/4 inches long and is stamped "sterling" on the back of the handle.  This is not a Masonic Spoon but rather one commissioned for sale by the Mt. Vernon Ladies Association of the Union and sold at their gift shop on the grounds of the Mt. Vernon estate.

The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association was founded in 1853.  The Association purchased Mount Vernon in 1858 from John Augustine Washington, a great-grandnephew of George Washington, and holds the property under a charter from the Commonwealth of Virginia.  Its members are chosen to represent the several states and serve without salary.  The Association was the first national historic preservation organization in the United States.  The object of the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association shall be:

To perpetuate the sacred memory of "The Father of his Country" and, with loving hands, to guard and protect the hallowed spot where rest his mortal remains.  To forever hold, manage and preserve the estate, properties and relics at Mt. Vernon, belonging to the Association, and, under proper regulations, to open the same to the inspection of all who love the cause of liberty and revere the name of Washington.
