The Mass of Chaos B—Solo
Ritual Script by Michael Osiris Snuffin (2008)
I have been interested in performing the Mass of Chaos B ever since I first read Peter Carroll’s classic Liber Null & Psychonaut (Samuel Weiser, 1987). I originally wrote up a detailed script that required a priest, two assistants and eleven congregants, but getting a group together to actually do the ritual proved to be a lot more difficult than writing it up.
This solo version of the Mass of Chaos B was inspired by a chance conversation at a Beltane party in 2007. An acquaintance I hadn’t seen in years told me about a friend of his that had practiced the Mass as a solo ritual (among other things). A light went on in my head, which was immediately followed by “Why the hell didn’t I think of that?” I started reworking the ritual for one person the next day, and I performed the Mass a few times during the Summer and Fall of 2007 with success.
The framework for this ritual is taken from Carroll’s Liber Null & Psychonaut, pages 130-132. I advise you to read Carroll’s book before performing this ritual, as he defines many terms and techniques used in the script. The purpose of this version of the Mass of Chaos B is given in the Statement of Intent: “It is my Will to manifest the spirit of the life-force, Baphomet, that we may strengthen and inspire the Kia within me.” The energy of this ritual can be directed toward any purpose desired by the Priest simply by changing the Statement of Intent and the Oath in the script.
0. Preparation
Set up an altar in a private place where you will be undisturbed. At the center of the altar should be a representation of Baphomet, either a statue or a large image. (Levi’s Baphomet from Transcendental Magic works well.) Other representations of Baphomet may also be placed upon the altar, as well as anything else that evokes correspondences or ideas of Baphomet. Place a black candle on one side of the altar and a white candle on the other.
The Priest (or Priestess) sits on a stool or chair in front of the altar. A red candle is placed behind the stool; therefore the Priest sits in the middle of an inverted triangle.
1. Opening
Perform the AL-KT banishing or other appropriate opening ritual.
2. Statement of Intent
The Priest holds the vessel of sacrament (genitals) and intones:
“It is my Will to manifest the spirit of the life-force, Baphomet, that we may strengthen and inspire the Kia within me.”
3. Invocation of Chaos
Drawing the sigil of Chaos in the air above the triangle, the Priest chants:
OL SONF VORS G GOHO VOVIN VABZIR DE TEHOM QADMON.
ZIRDO L IAIDA DS PRAF A LIL
ZIRDO CIAOFI CAOSGO MOSPLEH TELOCH
PANPIR MALPIRGI CAOSG.
ZAZAS ZAZAS NASATANATA ZAZAS.
4. Invocation of Baphomet
The Priest draws an inverted pentagram over his body, vibrating “IO PAN.” He then assumes the Attitude of Baphomet. (Right arm raised to eye-level with elbow square, two fingers held up; left arm pointing downwards, two fingers and thumb extended. Palms face forward. See Eliphas Levi’s illustration of Baphomet.)
The Priest reads the Invocation of Pan, then the Declaration of Baphomet from Liber A’ash. The Priest then completes the Invocation with the aeonic litany:
In the first aeon, I was the Great Spirit.
In the second aeon, Men knew me as the Horned God, Pangenitor Panphage.
In the third aeon, I was the Dark One, the Devil.
In the fourth aeon, Men know me not, for I am the Hidden One.
In this new aeon, I appear before you as Baphomet.
The God before all gods who shall endure to the end of the Earth!
5. Oath
The Priest as Baphomet masturbates to produce the sacrament. The sacrament is held aloft while the Priest states: “My Will be Done!” The sacrament is then consumed, either directly or by mixing it with wine or bread. The sacrament may also be smeared on the statue/image of Baphomet to consecrate it.
6. Closing
The Priest claps eight times as he slowly returns to semi-normal consciousness, then draws an upright pentagram over his body. Perform the AL-KT banishing or closing ritual to complete the Mass.
Invocations
Note: These invocations are slightly condensed versions of Crowley’s Hymn To Pan and Liber A’Ash. Feel free to use the originals if you prefer longer invocations, or make up your own.
An Invocation of Pan
(Adopted from Aleister Crowley’s
Hymn to Pan)
Thrill with lissome lust of the light
Come careering out of the night
Io Pan! Io Pan! Come over the sea
From Sicily and from Arcady!
Roaming as Bacchus, with fauns and pards
And nymphs and satyrs for thy guards,
On a milk-white ass, come over the sea
Come to me! Come to me!
In the moon of the woods, on the marble mount,
The dimpled dawn of the amber fount!
Dip the purple of passionate prayer
In the crimson shrine, the scarlet snare,
The soul that startles in eyes of blue
To watch thy wantonness weeping through
The tangled grove, the gnarled bole
Of the living tree that is spirit and soul
And body and brain --- come over the sea,
Devil or god, to me! To me!
I, who wait and writhe and wrestle
With air that hath no boughs to nestle
My body, weary of empty clasp,
Strong as a lion and sharp as an asp ---
Come, O come!
I am numb
With the lonely lust of devildom.
Thrust the sword through the galling fetter,
All-devourer, all-begetter;
Give me the sign of the Open Eye,
And the token erect of thorny thigh,
And the word of madness and mystery,
I am Pan! Io Pan! Io Pan Pan! Pan!
I am thy mate, I am thy man,
Goat of thy flock, I am gold, I am god,
Flesh to thy bone, flower to thy rod.
With hoofs of steel I race on the rocks
Through solstice stubborn to equinox.
And I rave; and I rape and I rip and I rend
Everlasting, world without end,
Monster, maiden, Maenad, man,
In the might of Pan.
Io Pan! Io Pan Pan! Pan! Io Pan!
Declaration of Baphomet
(From Aleister Crowley’s Liber A’Ash)
I am the Eye and the Tooth, the Goat of the Spirit, the Lord of Creation. I am the Eye in the Triangle, the Silver Star that ye adore.
I am Baphomet, that is the Eightfold Word that shall be equilibrated with the Three.
There is no act or passion that shall not be a hymn in mine honour.
All holy things and all symbolic things shall be my sacraments.
These animals are sacred unto me; the goat, and the duck, and the ass, and the gazelle, the man, the woman and the child.
All corpses are sacred unto me; they shall not be touched save in mine eucharist. All lonely places are sacred unto me; where one man gathereth himself together in my name, there will I leap forth in the midst of him.
I am the hideous god, and who mastereth me is uglier than I.
Yet I give more than Bacchus and Apollo; my gifts exceed the olive and the horse.
Who worshippeth me must worship me with many rites.
I am concealed with all concealments; when the Most Holy Ancient One is stripped and driven through the market place, I am still secret and apart.
Whom I love I chastise with many rods.
All things are sacred to me; no thing is sacred from me.
For there is no holiness where I am not.
Fear not when I fall in the fury of the storm; for mine acorns are blown afar by the wind; and verily I shall rise again, and my children about me, so that we shall uplift our forest in Eternity.
Eternity is the storm that covereth me.
I am Existence, the Existence that existeth not save through its own Existence, that is beyond the Existence of Existences, and rooted deeper than the No-Thing-Tree in the Land of No-Thing.
