Consecration of the Hallows
by T Polyphilus
The four principal ritual implements (or 'Hallows') of the Gnostic Mass are the Lance, Cup, Paten, and Sword. The "fifth of the four" is the Stele of Revealing, corresponding to the element of Spirit. They may be magically consecrated to their purpose by a Bishop, Priest or Priestess using the following ritual. Note that in order to maintain the effect of the consecration, they must thereafter be touched by none other than ordained clergy, or charged ritual officers of the Church in the performance of their duties. They may of course be re-consecrated by means of the original procedure. Note that the elemental references in the verses appear reversed; the idea is to temper each weapon with its opposing element, and thus to strengthen it.
Consecration takes place at the high altar, with the veil open. The candles are lit, and a vial of consecrated Holy Oil and The Book of the Law are close at hand upon the altar top. The Hallow to be consecrated is placed upon the center of the altar. It must already be clean and in good material condition.CONSECRATOR: “For pure will, unassuaged of purpose, delivered from the lust of result, is every way perfect.”
CONSECRATOR takes The Book of the Law in his or her right hand, touches it to the Hallow, and recites the appropriate stanza of consecration.CONSECRATOR traces from center to top arm: O PATHRThe CONSECRATOR sets down the Book, and places some oil on his right thumb. With the thumb he makes a + upon the Hallow, with a brief invocation, according to the following pattern:(Lance:) Be this consecrated lance
A shaft of light. The Lord who grants
His power to our work this day
Ensure its strength. I duly pray
That I may bear this sacred rod
With all the fitness of a god.
May waters rush to meet its thrust;
May it inspire the force of lust.
So may each heart and tongue fulfill
The law, that is love under will.(Cup:)Be this consecrated graal
The well of joy beyond the veil.
As into it our woe has rained
Let happiness therefrom be drained.
The flower of its brimming cup
Of nectar shall be offered up
To light the fire upon the tongue
Of God. Now let the song be sung:
So may each heart and tongue fulfill
The law, that is love under will.(Sword:)Be this consecrated sword
The key of freedom. May the Lord
Most Secret its chill steel imbue
With perfect justice, sharp and true.
This weapon wrought for mortal strife
May cleave asunder human life
From that more cosmic realm unknown:
The World's hidden heart of stone.
So may each heart and tongue fulfill
The law, that is love under will.(Paten:)Be this consecrated plate
The solar disc: the eye of fate,
That turned to Earth gives life and death--
The life that stirs in every breath,
And in the searing southern ray
The fatal end to breathing. May
It come from darkness to the East
To bear for us the holy feast.
So may each heart and tongue fulfill
The law, that is love under will.(Stele:) Let this ancient prophecy
Crown our holy sorcery.
Set to witness from above
Our life and liberty and love;
Its light from beyond time and space
Illuminating every face,
With color that will never fade:
Abomination fitly made!
So may each heart and tongue fulfill
The law, that is love under will.
