Feast of Cattle Liturgy for a Celebration
by T Polyphilus
(LDP 34/52)
with Sol in the Succedent Decan of Taurus
Temple arrangements: An open circular or elliptical space. In the center is a great pillar, adorned with garlands and flowers. Immediately to the solar East of the pillar is a small altar, on which a large disc or platter holds a sufficient number of cakes for all present. The cakes must be shaped like phalluses or ornamented with crosses of dark red frosting. Three candles are burning on floor candlesticks, or atop small pillars, arranged in a triangle around the center, with the point of the triangle towards the West.
Officers Eagle (in black) and Lion (in white) are West of the central pillar, Eagle to the North and Lion to the South. Officer Hierophant (in indigo, wearing a crown or headdress, and carrying a staff or large wand) stands just East of the altar. Drummers are stationed in any convenient place, out of the path of the action. A doorkeeper admits the other attendees, who take up positions in a circle around the officers.
Hierophant raises the wand and speaks: Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. The Star of the Flame is exalted, bringing benediction to the universe.
All answer: Love is the law, love under will.
Drummers begin to drum. The Hierophant moves to the West side of the pillar (between the pillar and the western candle), while the Lion and Eagle join the outer circle, and all join hands and begin to circle deosil. The officers (and all others who know, will, and dare to do so) chant:
Ring-a-ring o' roses,All fall to the ground at the verse's conclusion. Then they chant:
A pocket full of posies,
A-tishhoo! A-tishhoo!
We all fall down.
The cows are in the meadowAnd all resume their feet. Repeat the circling, chanting, falling, chanting and rising sequence twice more.
Lying fast asleep,
A-tishhoo! A-tishhoo!
We all get up again.
Lion and Eagle resume their previous stations. All stand facing center with arms crossed over their breasts. Hierophant places the wand crosswise against the central pillar. Low drumming.
Lion kneels in reverence facing West: Salutation to Hathor, holy cow in the pastures of Evening. Salutation to Hathor, in the Mountain of the West; in the land of perfect Peace, Salutation.
All: A devouring fire is thy soul, and the corpses of the dead are enkindled at thy breath.
Lion: Salutation to Hathor, whose necklace is of the Souls of the blessed ones of Amennti. Salutation to Hathor, whose girdle is of the Souls of the blessed ones of Seb. Salutation to Hathor, whose sandals are of the Souls of the blessed ones of Nu!
All: A devouring fire is thy soul, and the corpses of the dead are enkindled at thy breath.
Lion rises, faces center with arms crossed over his breast.
Eagle kneels in reverence facing East: Salutation to Apis, the beautiful bull of the Dawn. Salutation to Apis, butting and goring with fury against the reddened shroud.
All: A devouring fire is thy soul, and the corpses of the dead are enkindled at thy breath.
Eagle: Salutation to Apis, whose back beareth the mark of the Eagle. Salutation to Apis, to Apis that hath the beetle upon his tongue.
All: A devouring fire is thy soul, and the corpses of the dead are enkindled at thy breath.
All uncross their arms and sit. Silence.
Hierophant returns to the East and raises the wand: The word of Sin is Restriction. O man, refuse not thy wife, if she will! O lover, if thou wilt, depart! There is no bond that can unite the divided but love; all else is a curse.
Eagle stands: Lord secret and most holy, source of life, source of love, source of liberty, be thou ever constant and mighty within us, force of energy, fire of motion; with diligence let us ever labour with thee, that we may remain in thine abundant joy.
All: So mote it be.
Lion stands: Giver and receiver of joy, gate of life and love, be thou ever ready, thou and thine handmaiden, in thine office of gladness.
All: So mote it be.
Hierophant: Upon all that this day unite with love under will let fall success; may strength and skill unite to bring forth ecstasy, and beauty answer beauty.
All: So mote it be.
Lion and Eagle: AUMGN. AUMGN. AUMGN.
Hierophant: Worshipful are ye, O my lovers; let us forward to the dimmest hollow! There the lovely One shall spread us His holy banquet.
He uses the wand to draw a great averse pentagram of Earth over the cakes.
Hierophant holds the wand in his left hand, and lifts the platter in his right: OMNIA IN DUOS: DUO IN UNUM: UNUS IN NIHIL: HAEC NEC QUATUOR NEC OMNIA NEC DUO NEC UNUS NEC NIHIL SUNT.
Hierophant touches the wand to the platter of cakes: OFFERIMUS TIBI DONUM CORPUS DEI!
There is a burst of drumming, then silence.
Lion and Eagle join the circle in the East. Hierophant follows behind them with the platter, leaving the wand at the altar. Drumming resumes. Hierophant stands inside the eastern limit of the circle, which moves deosil, offering a cake to each person as they pass. Lion takes the first cake in the circle, and Eagle takes the last, with drummers falling in to receive the penultimate cakes. Officers resume their original stations, except for Hierophant (at altar). Drumming stops.
Hierophant sets down the platter, takes a cake, draws the sigil of Taurus with it over the platter: In the brown cakes of corn, we shall taste the food of the world and be strong!
All eat their cakes.
Hierophant returns to his station. All officers stand with their backs to the center.
Eagle makes the sign mulier: Sacrifice
Lion makes the sign vir: Cattle
Eagle makes the sign puella: Little
Lion makes the sign puer, and says: And Big
Heirophant makes the sign mater triumphans: After: a Child!
All: But not now!
Drumming as the ceremony is dissolved.
