Instead, several other references are provided with the program to give you all the information you need to get the most from it. To learn more about your new electronic references and how to use them, see the following electronic and printed documents: * HELP WITHIN THE PROGRAM: Webster's Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged includes an easy-to-use help system that likely contains answers to any questions you may encounter about using the program; it also provides details about the kinds of information that can be found in the dictionary, and about the typographical conventions used to display the information on-screen. To use the program's Help system, click on the Help menu and choose either the Contents and Index (Windows), Help contents (Macintosh), or Search for help on option to locate the information you want. * ON-SCREEN (ROLLOVER) HELP: In addition to the general HELP system, this program offers on-screen instructions that will appear in the status bar at the bottom of the program screen when you roll your cursor over key parts of the user interface. * PRINTED USER'S GUIDE: Webster's Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged on CD-ROM comes with a printed User's Guide that contains instructions for using the program and information about the types of information found in the dictionary. * PRINTABLE UNABRIDGED_GUIDE.PDF ON THE CD-ROM: On the CD-ROM, you will find an electronic document called Unabridged_guide.pdf that contains a printable user's guide you can use to help you learn to use the program. This file installs into the same directory as the dictionary itself; you can find it on your hard drive. If you have trouble finding the file, use your computer's Search or Find tool to locate it. You must use the Adobe Acrobat(R) Reader software to open and use the Unabridged_guide.pdf file. A copy of the Adobe software is included with this program or you can download it free from Adobe's Web site at http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/main.html. * QUICK START GUIDE IN THE CD-ROM CASE: The Quick Start Guide inside the front cover of the jewel case contains a brief overview of the program to help you install and begin using it. * EXPLANATORY NOTES: Within the program's HELP system (accessible from the Help menu) are sections called Explanatory Notes that describe the text-display conventions (e.g., bold, italics, abbreviations) that are used in the dictionary. * ONLINE FAQ: You can find a list of frequently asked questions related to this program on Merriam-Webster's Web site at http://www.merriam-webster.com/service/w3faq.htm. ========================================================= Registering Your Dictionary ========================================================= Registering your dictionary helps Merriam-Webster provide better technical support and makes it possible to inform you about new software developments. If you wish to avoid having AutoPlay start each time you insert the CD-ROM, hold down the SHIFT key when you insert the CD. ========================================================= Macros for Accessing Windows Word Processors ========================================================= Macros are small companion programs that are included with this program to make it easy to look up words from within your word processor. Macros are included that allow you to put a dictionary lookup button on the toolbar of either Microsoft(R) Word (Word 95 or higher) or Corel WordPerfect (R) (version 9.0 or higher). During installation, you will be given a choice which macro(s) to install; you can also elect not to install any macros. The installer should automatically detect which word processor version you are using. If it cannot find a compatible word processor, a screen will appear asking you to indicate where your word processor is installed. In some cases, the installer may fail to locate your properly installed older versions of Microsoft Word 95 or 97. If the installer cannot locate your word processor, a dialog box will appear asking you to locate it manually. The default installation path for both Microsoft Word 95 and 97 is: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office After locating your word processing program, the installer will add a button to the appropriate toolbar of Microsoft Word; if no toolbar button appears, contact technical support for assistance (see below for contact information). After the dictionary installation is complete, WordPerfect users will need to run a special helper macro within WordPerfect to finish the dictionary macro setup. To do so, follow these instructions: WordPerfect's helper macros establish a link to Merriam-Webster's Dictionary Lookup Macro. The helper macros are named AddMWtoToolbar.wmc and AddMWtoToolsmenu.wmc. To run a helper macro in WordPerfect, choose Macro > Play from the Tools menu, then select the appropriate macro to play. If you select AddMWtoToolbar.wmc, an icon will be added to your top toolbar. If you select AddMWtoToolmenu.wmc, an item will be added to your Tools menu. Either one will add an icon that looks like a cassette tape to the appropriate menu. Note: each time you run either of the AddMWto... macros another button will be added. We recommend running each of them only once. After the macro button is installed in your word processor, you can use it by placing your cursor in a word and clicking the button. This will bring up the dictionary. If the dictionary was open in the background before you clicked the macro button, the word containing the cursor will be looked up automatically. If it was not, click the macro button a second time (after the dictionary opens) to look up the word. NOTE: These macros are designed to work with the English-language alphabet and may not operate properly with non-English character sets. ================================================================ M-W Link for Macintosh ================================================================ M-W Link is a small companion program that allows Mac users to quickly access the dictionary from other programs. M-W Link is an extension that is loaded into the Extensions folder of your computer when you install the dictionary. Before you can use M-W Link, you will need to configure it so it can find the dictionary on your computer. To do so, navigate to the folder where you installed the dictionary and find the M-W Link icon and double-click on it. Use the Browse button to find the dictionary (i.e., to set the correct application location), then click Apply to save your changes. After you have saved your changes, you must restart your computer to load the new Extension configuration into your computer's System folder. Once M-W Link is correctly configured, you can use it to quickly open the dictionary from your other programs. To use it, simply highlight a word on the screen and press the M-W Link hot key combination (the default hot keys are COMMAND + CONTROL + D). The dictionary should open automatically. For more detailed instructions on using M-W Link, click on the Help menu of the program and choose the M-W Link section from the Table of Contents. ========================================================= Windows Screen Resolution ========================================================= If you use a Windows computer, your screen resolution must be set to 600 x 800 or higher for this program to function properly. To reset your screen resolution, right click on your Windows desktop and choose Properties from the menu that appears. Click on the Settings tab in the dialog box that appears and move the slider to the 600 x 800 setting. To display all of the colors in the illustrations properly, you must set your screen color depth to High Color. ========================================================= Font Issues ========================================================= All of the fonts needed to view the special characters in the dictionary should be installed along with the dictionary program. In rare cases, your computer may fail to recognize these fonts unless you restart your computer after the dictionary installation is complete. The dictionary's installation program should prompt you to restart your computer after it has finished adding the dictionary files to your hard drive. If the special dictionary symbols do not display correctly even after restarting, you may need to install the fonts manually. To do so, follow these steps: ************************ WINDOWS ************************* 1. Place the dictionary CD in the appropriate drive, then click the computer's Start button and choose Settings > Control Panel. 2. In the Control Panel, double-click on the Fonts icon. 3. When the Fonts folder opens, choose Install New Font from its File menu. 4. In the "Drives" drop-down box, choose your CD drive. 5. Locate the Fonts folder on the CD and click on it. 6. A list of the fonts needed for the program will appear in the "List of fonts" window. When they do, click the "Select All" button, then the "Add" or "OK" button. The special fonts needed for the dictionary will then be installed on your computer. ************************ MACINTOSH ************************* 1. Place the dictionary CD in the appropriate drive. 2. Find and open the folder named "Fonts" on the CD. 3. Drag the fonts to your computer's System folder. 4. If your computer asks if you want to place the fonts in the "Fonts" folder, say yes. The special fonts needed for the dictionary will then be installed on your computer. ========================================================= Very Long Results Lists ========================================================= Many searches in the dictionary can produce extremely long results lists. This program will automatically truncate very long results lists (e.g., those that include several thousand words) to prevent your computer from using too many resources in attempting to display such long lists. Try making your search more specific to obtain shorter results lists. ========================================================= Macintosh: Problems Launching the Dictionary ========================================================= Occasionally, you may find that an Extension on your Mac conflicts with the dictionary program. One program that sometimes conflicts with dictionary is named FaxSTF. If there is a conflict with FaxSTF, you may receive and error message saying the program cannot be launched when you try to start it. To resolve this problem, disable the extension STFinit, then restart your Mac. After restarting your computer, you should find that the dictionary works normally. ========================================================= Windows 95: MSVCIRT.DLL ========================================================= During installation or on trying to start the dictionary software, Some Windows 95 users may receive a message indicating that they need to install a file named MSVCIRT.DLL on their computer before the program will run properly. A copy of this file can be found in a folder named DLL on the Webster's Third CD-ROM. Copy this file from the CD (either by using the Windows copy utility or by dragging and dropping), then restart your computer. The dictionary program should now install and work properly. ========================================================= Technical Support ========================================================= If you have questions about installing or using this product on your computer, you may email our technical support staff at techsupport@m-w.com or call 1-800-696-0514 between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Pacific Time. ========================================================= License Agreement ========================================================= MERRIAM-WEBSTER END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT THIS LICENSE AGREEMENT ("LICENSE") GOVERNS YOUR USE OF THE COMPUTER PROGRAM AND REFERENCE CONTENT ON THE ENCLOSED DISC (COLLECTIVELY, THE "WORK").
