YARRELL, See also:WILLIAM (1784–1856) , See also:British naturalist, was See also:born in See also:London on the 3rd of See also:June 1784. His See also:father was a newspaper See also:agent, and he succeeded to the business, and prosecuted it till within a few years of his See also:death. He acquired the reputation of being the best shot and the first See also:angler in the See also:metropolis, and soon also became an See also:expert naturalist. In 1825 he was elected a See also:fellow of the Linnean Society, of which he subsequently became treasurer, and was a diligent contributor to their Transactions; and he was one of the See also:original members of the Zoological Society. The greater See also:part of his leisure towards the end of his See also:life was devoted to his two See also:great See also:works, The See also:History of British Fishes (2 vols., 1836) and The History of British Birds (2 v01s., 1843). These works from the first took See also:rank as See also:standard authorities. He died at See also:Yarmouth on the 1st of See also:September 1856.
