It extends along the See also:coast from the See also:town of Kipini at the mouth of the Ozi See also:river (2° 3o' S.) to the See also:northern limit of Manda See also:Bay (2° S.); See also:area 1200 sq. m. The See also:chief town, Witu, is 16 m. N. of Kipini. The See also:state was founded by Ahmed-See also:bin-Fumo Luti, the last Nabhan See also:sultan of Patta (an See also:island off the coast), who was conquered by Seyyid Majid of See also:Zanzibar. In 1885 Ahmed was induced to See also:place his See also:country under See also:German See also:protection, and in 1887 the limits of Witu were fixed by See also:international agreement. In 1890 See also:Germany transferred her protectorate to See also:Great See also:Britain. In the See also:September of that See also:year a British See also:naval force under See also:Admiral See also:Sir E. See also:Fremantle was sent against the sultan Bakari, who had succeeded Ahmed in 1887 and by whose orders nine German traders and settlers had been murdered. Disorders continued until 1894, and in the following year See also:Omar-bin-Hamed of the Nabhan See also:dynasty—an See also:ancient See also:race of See also:Asiatic origin—was recognized as sultan. The sultan is guided by a British See also:resident, and the state since the See also:accession of Sultan Omar has been both peaceful and prosperous.
