UELZEN , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the Prussian See also:province of See also:Hanover, on the See also:Ilmenau, See also:east of the famous Luneburger See also:Heide, at the junction of the railway connecting See also:Hamburg, Hanover, See also:Bremen and See also:Stendal, 52 M. S.E. of Hamburg. Pop. (1905), 9329. The town has four Evangelical churches, one of which, dedicated to the See also:Holy See also:Ghost, has a valuable See also:altar-piece dating from the 14th See also:century. The See also:principal See also:industries are See also:flax, See also:sugar, See also:tobacco and machinery, and there is a See also:trade in See also:cattle and horses. In the vicinity are some interesting See also:Slavonic remains and the former See also:Benedictine monastery of Ullesheim. Founded in the loth century as Lowenwold, Uelzen became in the See also:middle ages an active member of the Hanseatic See also:League. See Jaenicke, Geschichte der Stadt Uelzen (Hanover, 1889).
