TERAMO , an episcopal see of the Abruzzi, See also:Italy, the See also:capital of the See also:province of Teramo, 16 m. by See also:rail W.S.W. of Giulianova, a junction on the See also:Ancona-See also:Brindisi railway. Pop. (1901) 10,508 (See also:town); 24,091 (See also:commune). The town stands on the See also:left See also:bank of the Tordino, where it is joined by the Vezzola, at an See also:altitude of 876 ft. above See also:sea-level. The picturesque valley of the Tordino is here dominated by the peaks of the Gran Sasso d'Italia. The town 1s traversed by one straight wide See also:street with large houses, but for the most See also:part it consists of narrow lanes. The See also:cathedral has a Romanesque See also:Gothic portal of 1332 by a See also:Roman See also:marble worker named Deodatus, and the interior is decorated in the See also:Baroque See also:style, but still retains the pointed vaulting of 1154, introduced into Italy by See also:French See also:Benedictines; it contains a splendid See also:silver antependium by the 15th-See also:century See also:goldsmith Nicolo di Guardiagrele (1433-48). The See also:tower is See also:fine. The See also: Savini in Notizie degli scavi, 1898, 137). In the Communal See also:Gallery is an altarpiece from the cathedral by the Venetian Jacobello del Fiore (140o—143c). The antiquities include remains of a gateway, a See also:theatre and See also:baths, as well as numerous See also:inscriptions. There are manufactures of See also:wool and See also:silk, and of See also:straw hats and pottery. The See also:ancient Interamna Praetuttiornm (so called to distinguish it from Interamna Lirenas and Interamna Nahars) was the See also:chief town of the tribe of the See also:Praetuttii. Its pre-Roman See also:necropolis was discovered in 1905 (F. Savini in Notizie degli scavi, 1905, 267). Of its municipal constitution little is known, indeed in an inscription of the end of the See also:Republic it is spoken of both as a colonia and a See also:municipium. It was situated on a See also:branch of the Via See also:Caecilia (q.v.). Remains of an See also:amphitheatre still exist. In the valley of the Vomano near Monterio was a Roman See also:village, probably dependent on Interamna, with a See also:temple of See also:Hercules (Corp. inscr. See also:Lat., ix. p. 484). See V.
