In 1829 he discovered the theorem, regarding the determination of the number of real roots of a numerical See also:equation included between given limits, which bears his name (see EQUATION, V.), and in the following See also:year he was appointed See also:professor of See also:mathematics at the See also:College See also:Rollin. He was chosen a member of the Academie See also:des Sciences in 1836, became " repetiteur " in 1838, and in 184o professor in the 1 cote Polytechnique, and finally succeeded S. D. See also:Poisson in the See also:chair of See also:mechanics in the Faculte des Sciences at Paris.
