SOLWAY See also:FIRTH , an estuarine inlet of the Irish See also:Sea, between See also:England and See also:Scotland. If its mouth be taken as between St See also:Bee's See also:Head on the See also:English and Burrow Head on the Scottish See also:coast, its length is 50 M. The breadth at the mouth is 32 m.; near the head, where the Solway viaduct of the Caledonian See also:rail-way crosses the firth, it is nearly 12 m. The See also:general direction is See also:north-easterly from the mouth. The Scottish counties bordering the firth are See also:Wigtownshire, See also:Kirkcudbright and See also:Dumfriesshire; the English coast belongs to See also:Cumberland. On the English See also:side the See also:low Solway See also:Plain See also:borders the firth, except for a See also:short distance above St Bees Head. The Scottish See also:shore, however, is not continuously See also:flat, and such elevations as Criffell (1866 ft.), Bengairn (1250) and Cairnharrow (1497), above See also:Wigtown See also:Bay, rise See also:close to it. The shore See also:line is broken on both sides by the estuaries of several See also:rivers. Thus in Scotland the See also:Cree and other streams enter Wigtown Bay; the See also:Dee, Kirkcudbright Bay; Auchencairn Bay and Rough Firth receive numerous small streams, and the Nith discharges through a See also:long See also:estuary. The See also:Annan has its mouth near the See also:town of that name; and the Esk and See also:Eden at the head of the firth, in Cumberland. On this shore See also:Morecambe Bay receives the Wampool and Waver from the plain, the Ellen has its mouth at See also:Maryport, and the See also:Derwent from the See also:Lake See also:District at See also:Workington. The See also:waters of the firth are shallow, and a tidal See also:bore occurs periodically. The See also:fisheries are extensive, and though there are no ports of the first magnitude on the firth, a considerable See also:shipping See also:trade is carried on at See also:Whitehaven, See also:Harrington, Workington, Maryport and Silloth in Cumberland, and at Annan, Kirkcudbright, See also:Creetown and Wigtown on the Scottish side.
