In 1875 he was given an important command in the expedition against See also:Khokand under General See also:Kaufmann, showing great capacity in the See also:action of Makram, where he out-See also:man ceuvred a greatly See also:superior force and captured 58 guns, and in a brilliant See also:night attack in the See also:retreat from See also:Andijan, when he routed a large force with a handful of See also:cavalry. He was promoted to be See also:major-general, decorated with the See also:order of St See also:George, and appointed the first See also:governor of Fergana. In the See also:Turkish See also:War of 1877 he seized the See also:bridge over the Sereth at Barborchi in See also:April, and in See also:June crossed the See also:Danube with the 8th See also:corps. He commanded the Caucasian Cossack See also:Brigade in the attack of the See also:Green Hills at the second See also:battle of See also:Plevna. He captured Lovtcha on the 3rd of September, and distinguished himself again in the desperate fighting on the Green Hills in the third battle of Plevna. Promoted to be a See also:lieutenant-general, and given the command of the 16th See also:Division, he took part in the investment of Plevna and also in the fight of the 9th of See also:December, when See also:Osman See also:Pasha surrendered, with his See also:army. In See also:January 1878 he crossed the Balkans in a severe snowstorm, Ii 194 defeating the See also:Turks at Senova, near Schipka, and capturing 36,000 men and 90 guns. Dressed with care in See also:white See also:uniform and mounted on a white See also:horse, and always in the thickest of the fray, he was known and adored by his soldiers as the " White General." He returned to Turkestan after the war, and in 188o and 1881 further distinguished himself in retrieving the disasters inflicted by the Tekke Turkomans, captured Geok-Tepe, and, after much slaughter, reduced the Akhal-Teke country to submission.

He was at once recalled to St Petersburg. He was staying at a Moscow hotel, on his way from Minsk to his See also:estate See also:close by, when he died suddenly of See also:heart disease on the 7th of See also:July 1882.
