He first saw service in the See also:Helder expedition of 1799, and as a See also:captain he took See also:part in Sir See also:Ralph See also:Abercromby's expedition to See also:Egypt in 18os. He distinguished himself at See also:Maida, and soon afterwards was brought under the See also:notice of Sir John See also:Moore, who obtained a See also:majority for him and made him his military secretary. In this capacity he served through the See also:Corunna See also:campaign, and Sir John Moore's dying See also:request that he should be given a See also:lieutenant-colonelcy was at once complied with. In the summer of 1809 Lieut.-See also:Colonel Colborne was again in the See also:Peninsula, and before taking command of the 66th See also:regiment, he witnessed the defeat of the Spaniards at Ocaila. With the 66th he was See also:present at Busaco and shared in the See also:defence of the lines of Torres Vedras, and next See also:year, after temporarily commanding a See also:brigade with distinction at the See also:battle of See also:Albuera, he was gazetted to command the famous 52nd See also:Light See also:Infantry (See also:Oxfordshire and Bucks L.I.)with which See also:corps he is most closely identified. He led it and was very severely wounded at See also:Ciudad Rodrigo (1812), and only rejoined in See also:July 1814. Shortly after-wards he was placed in temporary See also:charge of a brigade of the Light See also:Division which he commanded in the See also:Pyrenees engagements and the battles of Orthes and See also:Toulouse. At the See also:peace he was made colonel, aide-de-See also:camp to the See also:Prince See also:Regent and K.C.B. In 1815 Colborne and the 52nd at See also:Waterloo played a brilliant part in the repulse of the Old Guard at the See also:close of the See also:day. Promoted See also:major-See also:general in 1825, Colborne was soon after-wards made lieutenant-See also:governor of See also:Guernsey. In 183o he served as lieutenant-governor of Upper See also:Canada.

In 1838 at the moment of his vacating the See also:

post on promotion to lieutenant-general, the See also:rebellion See also:broke out, and he was ordered to assume the functions of governor-general and See also:commander-in-See also:chief. He quickly repressed the revolt, and in 1839, returning See also:home, he was raised to the See also:peerage as Baron Seaton of Seaton in See also:Devonshire. From 1843 to 1849 he was high See also:commissioner of the Ionian islands. In 1854 he was promoted full general, and from 1855 to r86o he was commander-in-chief in See also:Ireland.
