Having studied See also:law at See also:Gottingen, he became See also:chief See also:magistrate at Lilienthal, near See also:Bremen, in 1788. Here he built an See also:observatory, and, equipped in 1785 by a 7-ft. reflector by See also:Herschel, and later by a 13-ft. reflector by Johann Gottlieb See also:Friedrich See also:Schrader of See also:Kiel, he made his famous observations on the See also:surface features of the See also:moon and See also:planets. His See also:work was ruined in 1813 by the See also:French under See also:Vandamme, who destroyed his books, writings and observatory; he never recovered from the See also:catastrophe, and died on the 29th of August 1816.
