At an See also:early See also:age he entered the See also:army, where he distinguished himself under the emperors See also:Valerian, See also:Claudius and See also:Aurelian. He was appointed See also:governor of the See also:East by the emperor See also:Tacitus, at whose See also:death he was immediately proclaimed his successor by the soldiers. Florianus, who had claimed to succeed his See also:brother, was put to death by his own troops, and the See also:senate eagerly ratified the choice of the army. The reign of Probus was mainly spent in successful See also:wars by which he re-established the See also:security of all the frontiers, the most important of these operations being directed to clearing See also:Gaul of the Germans. Probus had also put down three usurpers, See also:Saturninus, Proculus and Bonosus. One of his principles was never to allow the soldiers to be idle, and to employ them in See also:time of See also:peace on useful See also:works, such as the planting of vineyards in Gaul, Pannonia and other districts. This increase of duties was naturally unpopular, and while the emperor was urging on the draining of the marshes of his native See also:place he was attacked and slain by his own soldiers. Scarcely any emperor has See also:left behind him so See also:good a reputation; his death was mourned alike by senate and See also:people, and even the soldiers repented and raised a See also:monument in his See also:honour.
