Pushkin in one of his poems described See also:young Gorchakov as " See also:Fortune's favoured son," and predicted his success. On leaving the lyceum Gorchakov entered the See also:foreign See also:office under See also:Count See also:Nesselrode. His first See also:diplomatic See also:work of importance was the negotiation of a See also:marriage between the See also:grand duchess See also:Olga and the See also:crown prince See also:Charles of See also:Wurttemberg. He remained at See also:Stuttgart for some years as Russian See also:minister and confidential adviser of the crown princess. He foretold the outbreak of the revolutionary spirit in See also:Germany and See also:Austria, and was credited with counselling the See also:abdication of See also:Ferdinand in favour of See also:Francis See also:Joseph. When the See also:German See also:confederation was re-established in 185o in See also:place of the See also:parliament of See also:Frankfort, Gorchakov was appointed Russian minister to the See also:diet. It was here that he first met Prince See also:Bismarck, with whom he formed a friendship which was after-wards renewed at St See also:Petersburg. The See also:emperor See also:Nicholas found that his See also:ambassador at See also:Vienna, See also:Baron Meyendorff, was not a sympathetic See also:instrument for carrying out his schemes in the See also:East. He therefore transferred Gorchakov to Vienna, where the latter remained through the See also:critical See also:period of the See also:Crimean See also:War. The See also:DIVISION has an See also:area of 9534 sq. m.
