OETA (mod. Kotavothra) , a See also:mountain to the See also:south of See also:Thessaly, in See also:Greece, forming a boundary between the valleys of the Spercheius and the Boeotian Cephissus. It is an offshoot of the See also:Pindus range, 7o8o ft. high. In its eastern portion, called Callidromus, it comes See also:close to the See also:sea, leaving only a narrow passage known as the famous pass of See also:Thermopylae (q.v.). There was also a high pass to the See also:west of Callidromus leading over into the upper Cephissus valley. In See also:mythology Oeta is chiefly celebrated as the See also:scene of the funeral pyre on which Heracles burnt himself before his See also:admission to See also:Olympus.
