OBERSTEIN , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the principality of See also:Birkenfeld, belonging to the See also:grand duchy of See also:Oldenburg, on the See also:river See also:Nahe, 33m. S.W. of See also:Kreuznach, by the railway to Mifnsteram-See also:Stein. Pop. (1905) 9669. It is famous for the cutting and setting of agates and other See also:precious stones, an See also:industry which has been established here, and in the neighbouring township of See also:Idar, since the 16th See also:century. The Evangelical See also:church, built in the 12th century and restored in 1482, is partly hewn out of the solid See also:rock. On the hills above the town are the ruins of two castles.
