It stands on the See also:northern See also:base of the See also:mountain of the same name, an See also:extinct See also:volcano. It is a handsome town with many See also:fine buildings of See also:white See also:limestone and grey and red See also:dolomite, which abound in the neighbourhood, the See also:church of St See also:Paul being the finest edifice of its See also:kind outside Adelaide. The agricultural society has a See also:good showground where two shows are held annually. Two splendid lakes See also:lie near the town—See also:Blue See also:Lake, 16o acres in extent, and Valley Lake, 97 acres, from the first of which the See also:water-See also:supply of the town is derived. Mount Gambier is the centre of one of the richest See also:grain-growing districts in Australia. Pop. (1901), 3162; and including the suburbs, about 8000.
