MONDOVI , a See also:

town and episcopal see of the See also:province of See also:Cuneo, See also:Piedmont, See also:Italy, 17 M. by See also:rail E. of Cuneo. Pop. (1901), 5379 (town); 18,982 (See also:commune). The See also:lower town is 1283 ft. above See also:sea-level, the upper 1834 ft. There is a school of the See also:industrial arts and handicrafts, and See also:majolica, See also:paper, and See also:silk cocoons are produced. The upper town contains the hexagonal piazza, a citadel, erected in 1573 by Emanuel Philibert, the See also:cathedral of S. See also:Donatus, a spacious episcopal See also:palace, and higher up is a See also:tower, the See also:Belvedere, with a See also:fine view. At the See also:foot of the See also:hill along the See also:banks of the Ellero (a tributary of the Po) See also:lie the industrial and commercial suburbs of Breo, Borgatto, Pian della See also:Valle and Carassone, with their See also:potteries, tanneries, paper-See also:mills, See also:marble-See also:works, &c. The See also:mansion of See also:Count See also:San Quintino in Pian della Valle was the seat of the See also:printing-See also:press which from 1472 issued books with the imprint See also:Mons Regalis. Mondovi—Mons Vici,Mons Regalis,Monteregale—did not take its rise till about A.D. 1000.

dates from 1388. About 2 M. to the See also:east is the See also:sanctuary of See also:Vico, a See also:church designed by Ascanio Vittozzi in 1596 and crowned by a famous See also:dome (1730-1748), which has been declared a See also:national See also:monument. In the square before it is a monument (1891) to See also:Charles See also:Emmanuel I. of See also:Savoy. See L. Melano See also:Rossi, The Sanctuario of the Madonna di Vito (See also:London, 1907).
