MASSA MARITTIMA , a See also:town and episcopal see of the See also:province of See also:Grosseto, See also:Tuscany, See also:Italy, 24 M. N.N.W. of Grosseto See also:direct and 16 m. by See also:rail N.E. of Follonica (which is 28 M. N.W. of Grosseto on the See also:main See also:coast railway), 1444 ft. above See also:sea-level. Pop. (19o1), (town) 9219; (See also:commune) 17,519. It has a See also:cathedral of the 13th See also:century containing a Romanesque See also:font (1267 with a See also:cover of 1447) and a See also:Gothic reliquary (1324) of the See also:saint Cerbone, to whom the cathedral is dedicated. The battlemented municipal See also:palace of the 13th century is picturesque. There are See also:mineral springs, mines of See also:iron, See also:mercury, See also:lignite and See also:copper, with foundries, ironworks and See also:olive-oil See also:mills. At Follonica on the coast, but in this commune, are the furnaces in which are smelted the iron ore of See also:Elba.
