He came to an open rupture with Licinius in 313, sustained a crushing defeat in the neighbourhood of See also:Heraclea Pontica on the 3oth of See also:April, and fled, first to See also:Nicomedia and afterwards to See also:Tarsus, where he died in See also:August following. His death was variously ascribed " to despair, to See also:poison, and to the divine See also:justice." Maximinus has a See also:bad name in See also:Christian See also:annals, as having renewed persecution after the publication of the See also:toleration See also:edict of Galerius, but it is probable that he has been judged too harshly.
