He See also:rose to high distinction after he had joined the See also:army, and in 305 he was raised by his See also:uncle, Galerius, to the See also:rank of See also:Caesar, with the See also:government of See also:Syria and See also:Egypt. In 308, after the See also:elevation of See also:Licinius, he insisted on receiving the See also:title of See also:Augustus; on the See also:death of Galerius, in 311, he succeeded to the supreme command of the provinces of See also:Asia, and when Licinius and See also:Constantine began to make See also:common cause with one another Maximinus entered into a See also:secret See also:alliance with See also:Maxentius. He came to an open rupture with Licinius in 313, sustained a crushing defeat in the neighbourhood of See also:Heraclea Pontica on the 3oth of See also:April, and fled, first to See also:Nicomedia and afterwards to See also:Tarsus, where he died in See also:August following. His death was variously ascribed " to despair, to See also:poison, and to the divine See also:justice." Maximinus has a See also:bad name in See also:Christian See also:annals, as having renewed persecution after the publication of the See also:toleration See also:edict of Galerius, but it is probable that he has been judged too harshly.
