MANIHIKI (MANAHIKI, MONAHIKI) , a scattered See also:archipelago in the central Pacific Ocean, between 40 and 11° S., and 15o° and 162° W., seldom visited, and producing only a little See also:copra and See also:guano. It may be taken to include the See also:Caroline or See also:Thornton Islands, Vostok and See also:Flint to the See also:east; See also:Suvarov, Manihiki or See also:Humphrey, and Tongareva or See also:Penrhyn to the See also:west, and Starbuck and See also:Malden to the See also:north, the whole thus roughly forming the three corners of a triangle. There are See also:pearl and pearl-See also:shell See also:fisheries at Tongareva and Suvarov. The natives (about r000) are Polynesians and nominally See also:Christian. There are See also:ancient See also:stone buildings of former in-habitants on Malden See also:Island. The islands were mostly discovered See also:early in the 19th See also:century, and were annexed by See also:Great See also:Britain mainly in 1888-1889.
