When he was nineteen he founded a See also:review, La Conque, which brought him into contact with the leaders of the Parnassians, and counted See also:Swinburne, See also:Maeterlinck, See also:Mallarme and others among its contributors. He won notoriety by his novel See also:Aphrodite (1896), which gave a vivid picture of Alexandrian morals at thebeginning of the See also:Christian era. His Chansons de Bilitis, See also:roman lyrique (1894), which purported to be a See also:translation from the See also:Greek, is a glorification of Sapphic love, which in subject-See also:matter is objectionable in the highest degree; but its delicate decadent See also:prose is typical of a See also:modern French See also:literary school, and some of the " songs " were set to See also:music by See also:Debussy and others. Later books are: La Femme et le See also:pantin (1898); See also:Les Aventures du roi Pausole (1900); Sanguines (1903); Archipel (1906). Louys married in 1899 See also:Louise de See also:Heredia, younger daughter of the poet.
