KLERKSDORP , a See also:

town of the See also:Transvaal, 118 In. S.W. of See also:Johannesburg and 192 M. N.E. of See also:Kimberley by See also:rail. Pop. (1904), 4276 of whom 2203 were whites. The town, built on the See also:banks of the Schoonspruit 10 m. above its junction with the See also:Vaal, possesses several See also:fine public buildings. In the neighbourhood are See also:gold-mines, the See also:reef appearing to See also:form the western boundary of the Witwatersrand See also:basin. Diamonds (See also:green in See also:colour) and See also:coal are also found in the See also:district. Klerksdorp was one of the villages founded by the first Boers who crossed the Vaal, dating from 1838. The See also:modern town, which is on the See also:side of the spruit opposite the old See also:village, was founded in r888.
