(1689-1750), See also:king of See also:Portugal, was See also:born at See also:Lisbon on the 22nd of See also:October 1689, and succeeded his See also:father Pedro II. in See also:December 1706, being proclaimed on the 1st of See also:January 1707. One of his first acts was to intimate his adherence to the See also:Grand See also:Alliance, which his father had joined in 1703. Accordingly his See also:general Das See also:Minas, along with See also:Lord See also:Galway, advanced into See also:Castile, but sustained the defeat of Almanza (See also:April 14). In October 1708 he married Maria See also:Anna, daughter of See also:Leopold I., thus strengthening the affiance with See also:Austria; the See also:series of unsuccessful See also:campaigns which ensued ultimately terminated in a favourable See also:peace with See also:France in 1713 and with See also:Spain in 1715. The See also:rest of his See also:long reign was characterized by royal subservience to the See also:clergy, the See also:kingdom being administered by ecclesiastical persons and for ecclesiastical See also:objects to an extent that gave him the best of rights to the See also:title " Most Faithful King," bestowed upon him and his successors by a See also:bull of See also:Pope See also:Benedict XIV. in 1748. John V. died on the 31st of See also:July 1750, and was succeeded by his son See also:Joseph.
