JOHN See also:GEORGE III . (1647-1691), elector of See also:Saxony, the only son of John George II., was See also:born on the loth of See also:June 1647. He forsook the vacillating See also:foreign policy of his See also:father and in June 1683 joined an See also:alliance against See also:France. Having raised the first See also:standing See also:army in the electorate he helped to drive the See also:Turks from See also:Vienna in See also:September 168o, leading .his men with See also:great gallantry; but disgusted with the attitude of the See also:emperor See also:Leopold I. after the victory, he returned at once to Saxony. However, he sent aid to Leopold in 1685. When See also:Louis XIV.'s armies invaded See also:Germany in September 1688 John George was one of the first to take up arms against the See also:French, and after sharing in the See also:capture of See also:Mainz he was appointed See also:commander-in-See also:chief of the imperial forces. He had not, however, met with any notable success when he died at See also:Tubingen on the 12th of September 1691. Like his father, he was very fond of See also:music, but he appears to have been less extravagant than John George II. His wife was See also:Anna See also:Sophia, daughter of See also:Frederick III. See also:king of See also:Denmark, and both his sons, John George and Frederick See also:Augustus, became See also:electors of Saxony, the latter also becoming king of See also:Poland as Augustus II.
