IMBROS , a See also:Turkish See also:island in the See also:Aegean, at the See also:southern end of the Thracian See also:Chersonese See also:peninsula. It forms with See also:Samothrace, about 17 M. distant, a caza (or See also:canton) in the sanjak of See also:Lemnos and See also:province of the See also:Archipelago Isles. See also:Herodotus (v. 26) mentions it as an See also:abode of the historic See also:Pelasgians (q.v.). It was, like Samothrace, a seat of the See also:worship of the Cabeiri (q.v.). The. island is now the seat of a See also:Greek bishopric. There is communication with the mainland by occasional vessels. The island is of See also:great fertility—See also:wheat, oats, See also:barley, See also:olives, See also:sesame and valonia being the See also:principal products, in addition to a variety of fruits.
