He graduated at Rutgers See also:College in 1863, was admitted to the See also:bar in 1869, practised See also:law at See also:Paterson, N.J., and See also:rose to prominence in the See also:State. He was long conspicuous in the State Republican organization, was chairman of the New See also:Jersey State Republican See also:Committee from 188o to 1890, became a member in 1884 of the Republican See also:National Committee, and was the delegate-at-large from New Jersey to five successive Republican national nominating conventions. He served in the New Jersey See also:Assembly in 1873–1874, and in the New Jersey See also:Senate in 1877–1882, and was See also:speaker of the Assembly m 1874 and president of the Senate in 1881 and 1882. He was also prominent and successful in business and accumulated a large See also:fortune. He accepted the nomination as Vice-President in 1896, on the See also:ticket with President See also:McKinley, and was elected; but while still in See also:office he died at Paterson, N.J., on the 21st of See also:November 1899.
