He was educated at the high school, See also:Dumfries, and afterwards (1833—1834) at the university of See also:Edinburgh where he acquired an See also:interest in See also:geology from the teachings of Robert See also:Jameson and J. D. See also:Forbes. Returning to Ormskirk he worked zealously at the See also:local geology, especially on the See also:Coal-See also:measures and New Red See also:Sandstone, his first See also:paper (read before the See also:Manchester Geol. See also:Soc. in 1843) being on The See also:Climate of the Coal See also:Epoch. In 1848 his See also:family went to reside in Dumfries and there he commenced to See also:work on the See also:Silurian rocks of the S.W. of See also:Scotland, and in 1849 he carried his investigations into See also:Cumberland. In these regions during the next few years he added much to our knowledge of the strata and their fossils, especially See also:graptolites, in papers read before the See also:Geological Society of See also:London. He wrote also on the New Red rocks of the See also:north of See also:England and Scotland. In 1853 he was appointed See also:professor of geology in See also:Queen's See also:College, See also:Cork, and in 1856 he was elected F.R.S. During this See also:period he wrote some articles on the geology of parts of See also:Ireland, and exercised much See also:influence as a teacher, but he returned to England during his vacations and devoted himself assiduously to the geology of the See also:Lake See also:district. He was also a See also:constant attendant at the meetings of the See also:British Association.

In 1876 the See also:

syllabus for the Queen's Colleges in Ireland was altered, and Professor Harkness was required to lecture not only on geology, palaeontology, See also:mineralogy and See also:physical See also:geography, but also on See also:zoology and See also:botany. The See also:strain of the extra work proved too much, he decided to relinquish his See also:post, and had retired but a See also:short See also:time when he died, on the 4th of See also:October 1878.
