ENSCHEDE , a See also:

town in the See also:province of See also:Overysel, See also:Holland, near the Prussian frontier, and a junction station 5 M. by See also:rail S.E. of See also:Hengelo. Pop. (1900) 23,141. It is important as the centre of the flourishing See also:cotton-See also:spinning and See also:weaving See also:industries of the Twente See also:district; while by the railway via Gronau and See also:Koesfeld to See also:Dortmund it is in See also:direct communication with the Westphalian coalfields. Enschede possesses several churches, an See also:industrial See also:trade school, and a large See also:park intended for the benefit of the working classes. About two-thirds of the town was burnt down in 1862.
