He was educated at See also:Westminster and See also:Christ See also:Church, See also:Oxford, and having inherited a See also:fortune from his See also:uncle, a well-known bookseller, devoted himself to the study of classical authors and See also:manuscripts. In 1798 he was appointed to the chapelry of Little Horkesley in See also:Essex, which he held till his See also:death. He travelled extensively in See also:France and See also:Italy, and spent the See also:winter of 1818 in examining the See also:MSS. in the Laurentian library at See also:Florence. In 1819 he was commissioned, with See also:Sir See also:Humphry See also:Davy, to decipher the papyri found at See also:Herculaneum, but the results proved insignificant. In 1823 he was appointed See also:principal of St See also:Alban's See also:Hall, Oxford, and See also:Camden See also:professor of See also:ancient See also:history. He died in Oxford on the 8th of See also:March 1825. Elmsley was a See also:man of most extensive learning and See also:European reputation, and was considered to be the best ecclesiastical scholar in See also:England. But it is chiefly by his See also:collation of the MSS. of the See also:Greek tragedians and his See also:critical labours on the restoration of their See also:text that he will be remembered. He edited the Acharnians of See also:Aristophanes, and several of the plays and scholia of See also:Sophocles and See also:Euripides. He was the first to recognize the importance of the Laurentian MS. (see See also:Sandys, Hist. of Class.
