Ludwig Doderlein, after receiving his preliminary See also:education at Windsheim and Schulpforta (See also:Pforta), studied at See also:Munich, See also:Heidelberg, See also:Erlangen and See also:Berlin. He devoted his See also:chief See also:attention to See also:philology under the instruction of such men as F. See also:Thiersch, G. F. Creuzer, J. H. See also:Voss, F. A. See also:Wolf, See also:August See also:Bockh and P. K. See also:Buttmann. In 1815, soon after completing his studies at Berlin, he accepted the See also:appointment of See also:ordinary professor of philology in the See also:academy of See also:Bern. In 1818 he was transferred to Erlangen, where he became second professor of philology in the university and See also:rector of the gymnasium. In 1827 he became first professor of philology and See also:rhetoric and director of the philological See also:seminary. He died on the 9th of See also:November 1863. Dbderlein's most elaborate See also:work as a philologist was marred by over-subtlety, and lacked method and clearness. He is best known by his Lateinische Synonymen and Etymologien (1826–1838), and his Homerisches Glossarium(1850-1858). To the same class belong his Lateinische Wortbildung (1838), Handbuch der lateinischen Synonymek (1839), and the Handbuch der lateinischen Etymologie (1841), besides various See also:works of a more elementary See also:kind intended for the use of See also:schools and gymnasia. Most of the works named have been translated into See also:English. To See also:critical philology Doderlein contributed valuable See also:editions of See also:Tacitus (See also:Opera, 1847; Germania, with a German See also:translation) and See also:Horace (Epistolae, with a German translation, 1856–1858; Satirae, x86o). His Reden and Aufstitze (Erlangen, 1843–1847) and Offentliche Reden (1860) consist chiefly of See also:academic addresses dealing with various subjects in paedagogy and philology.
