DILETTANTE , an See also:Italian word for one who delights in the See also:fine arts, especially in See also:music and See also:painting, so a See also:lover of the fine arts in See also:general. The Ital. dilettare is from See also:Lat. detect are, to delight. Properly the word refers to an " See also:amateur " as opposed to a " professional " cultivation of the arts, but like " amateur " it is often used in a depreciatory sense for one who is only a dabbler, or who only has a superficial knowledge or See also:interest in See also:art. The Dilettanti Society founded in 1733-1734 still exists in See also:England. A See also:history of the society, by Lionel Cust, was published in 1898.
