See also:COLE, VICAT (1833–1893) , See also:English painter, See also:born at Ports-mouth on the 17th of See also:April 1833, was the son of the landscape painter, See also:George Cole, and in his practice followed his See also:father's See also:lead with marked success. He exhibited at the See also:British Institution at the See also:age of nineteen, and was first represented at the Royal See also:Academy in 1853. His See also:election as an See also:associate of this institution took See also:place in 1870, and he became an Academician ten years later. He died in See also:London on the 6th of April 1893. The wide popularity of his See also:work was due partly to the See also:simple directness of his technical method, and partly to his habitual choice of attractive material. Most of his subjects were found in the counties of See also:Surrey and See also:Sussex, and along the See also:banks of the See also:Thames. One of his largest pictures, " The See also:Pool of London," was bought by the See also:Chantrey Fund Trustees in r888, and is now in the See also:Tate See also:Gallery. See See also:Robert Chignell, The See also:Life and Paintings of Vicat Cole, R.A. (London, 1899).
