CARSON See also:CITY , the See also:capital of See also:Nevada, U.S.A., and the See also:county seat of Ormsby county, about 120 M. N.E. of See also:Sacramento, See also:California. Pop. (1890) 3950; (rgoo) 2100; (1910) 2466. It is served by the See also:Virginia and Truckee railway, which has repair shops here, and by See also:stage to See also:Lake Tahoe, 12 M. W. of the city. It is picturesquely situated in See also:Eagle valley, near the See also:east See also:base of the Sierra Nevada, at an See also:elevation of 4720 ft. above the See also:sea. Within 1 m. of the city are Shaws Hot Springs. The city is a distributing point for the neighbouring See also:mining region. Among the public buildings are the capitol, the See also:United States See also:government See also:building, a United States See also:mint, and a See also:state orphans' See also:home; in the vicinity are the state See also:prison and a United States government school for See also:Indians. The See also:industrial interests of the city are principally in mining, lumbering and See also:agriculture. It has an excellent See also:supply of See also:mountain See also:spring See also:water.

Carson City (named in See also:

honour of See also:Christopher Carson) was settled in 1851 as a trading See also:post, was laid out as a See also:town in 1858, was made the capital of the state and the county seat of the newly erected county in 1861, and was chartered as a city in 1875.
